Drift: The Performance DRAIN That Feels Like Work
Drift is the most productive-feeling unproductive thing we all do.
You have a report to write. A hard conversation to have. A decision rolling around in your head for two weeks. So you reorganize the to-do list. Read an article about productivity systems. Download a new app. Make a fresh pot of coffee. Clean the desk.
So busy. So productive. So much accomplished.
You did not do the thing.
Here is what nobody in the productivity space will tell you because it does not sell courses: you do not have a productivity problem. You do not need a better system. You do not need to optimize your morning routine.
You need to start.
That is the whole answer.
Nobody struggles to start physical work. You do not stand in front of a pile of lumber paralyzed about which board to pick up first. You pick one up and start building. Cognitive work is different. It is hard. It is ambiguous. It requires you to produce something from nothing and then have someone judge it. Of course your brain looks for an exit.
So here is your prescription. Physician-approved. Evidence-based. Free.
Set a timer. Start typing. Even if it is garbage. Even if you delete it all. Even if the first three sentences are just you complaining about having to write the thing.
You started. Your brain is now in the work. The DRAIN is broken.
What if the thing I have to do is a phone call or a difficult conversation?
You still type. Script the call. Outline the conversation. Write the opening line. Type out the three points you need to make before you walk into that room. You are not writing an essay. You are rehearsing. And rehearsal reduces the cognitive load of the actual event so dramatically that the thing you have been avoiding for two weeks becomes something you can do in the next ten minutes.
This is not a productivity hack. This is behavioral science. Mental rehearsal has been shown in peer-reviewed literature to improve performance and reduce cognitive load across high-stakes environments — from surgical teams to elite athletes to military operators.
Identify the DRAIN. Run the CLEAR. Make your MOVE.
Drift is the DRAIN. Starting is the CLEAR. Set the timer. That is the first MOVE.
If you want to identify which DRAIN is impairing your performance right now, start with the free Performance Readiness Assessment. Ten minutes. Physician-designed. No app download required.
